The lord of the house, Sir Geoffrey Heron, is distraught because his young daughter, Cecily, has just gone missing. After Alicia writes an inflammatory note to Queen Mary, Kate takes the blame and is exiled to an isolated castle, or gard, known as Elvenwood Hall. In 1550s England, Kate Sutton and her sister Alicia are ladies-in-waiting for Elizabeth I during the reign of Elizabeth’s sister Mary, Queen of Scots. Revisiting this book as an adult who’s more knowledgeable about literature, psychology, and mythology always enriches my interpretations. It’s atmospheric and perfect to read around Halloween. ![]() I found it in a discount book warehouse in middle school, and Richard Cuffari’s eerie pen-and-ink illustrations captivated me. An exception is Elizabeth Marie Pope’s The Perilous Gard, a Newbery Honor, YA, historical fantasy novel from 1974. I usually prefer to discover new books instead of rereading old favorites. ![]()
